At Northern Primary School we are passionate about ensuring all children become confident and enthusiastic readers and writers. We use the scheme Read Write Inc. to ensure consistency across school. Through phonics, children learn to segment words to support their spelling ability and blend sounds to read words. The teaching of phonics is of high priority.

Reading opens the door to learning. A child who reads a lot will become a good reader. A good reader will be able to read more challenging material. A child who reads challenging material is a child who will learn. The more a child learns, the more he or she will want to find out.

When children first start in Year Two, RWI phonics continues for the Autumn term. Children then move on to the No Nonsense spelling scheme and apply the knowledge they have gained through RWI. Some children may need longer to feel secure with all of the RWI sounds. Therefore, these children will continue with daily phonics sessions. Your child's class teacher will liaise with you if your child needs extra support in this area.
