The Bacup Evacuees

Make sure you have your gas mask!

As part of our local history topic, we looked at the experiences of children in the Second World War in Bacup. We started with just a photograph of evacuees arriving and uncovered more details using different sources, including newspaper and radio from the time. We even discovered that 89 of the evacuees were sent to our school to wait before being sent off to live with their new families! We also found out that they were expected to have their gas masks everywhere and have them ready to put on straight away, getting our hands on one to see what they had to carry around!
