Fossil Experts!

We became paleontologists today in Year 3 as we learned all about how fossils were formed - and made some ourselves! We started by looking at actual 130 million year old fossils thanks to the Lancashire Museums service and talking about each one - how the fossil wasn't actually a shell, bark or bone. Then we followed the process of fossilisation to make our own; we pretended a dinosaur had died (really a plastic one) and sank into mud (clay). The flesh and eventually the skeleton rotted and washed away, leaving the mould. We then used papier mache to imagine water seeping in and depositing minerals to leave the cast of the fossil! Lastly, we organised each and every stage to show what we learned. Well done Year 3!
