Partitioning - it's something that comes in handy with mental maths over and over again. But what is it? I means splitting up a number. Think of 'part' in partitioning, making one number into two, or even more! One of the easiest ways is to split it up into place value.

 

Let's look at splitting up the number...46. Let's put it in a place value grid.

So we have 4 tens, and 6 units. 

 

4 tens, is 40. 6 units is...just 6! 

 

so we can partition 46 into 40 + 6.
