  • Dog Safety Assembly

    Mon 26 Feb 2018

Today, we had a special visitor at Northern Primary School.

Billy Boo and his owner Julia held a special assembly in aid of the Blue Cross for Pets.

Julia explained to all the children how we can be safe with dogs.

We looked at different pictures of dogs and assessed their behaviour and stance; we learnt how dogs can look 'red', 'amber' or 'green'.

Red - This was a 'go away' stance and we learnt that is best not to approach these dogs.

Amber - This was a 'be careful' dog and we learnt that these dogs are unsure and it is best to keep away.

Green - This was a 'I'm happy' dog and we learnt that after approaching the dog's owner, we could say hello to this dog.

Some very lucky children then got to have a cuddle with Billy Boo.

  • Woolly Weir Wildlife Project

    Thu 08 Feb 2018

Weir Pride have received funding to work with members of the local community and also with pupils at Northern Primary School to create a wildlife menagerie for Weir Park.

The children are attending a Knitting Club on a Thursday lunchtime when they are being supported in learning: how to knit, how to make pompoms and how to create french knitting.

Keep your eyes on Weir Park to see all of the woolly wildlife creations taking pride of place.

If you would like to get involved at the Doals Centre then contact Weir Pride.

  • Playground Peace Police

    Thu 08 Feb 2018

On Wednesday 31st January, the School Council along with Mrs Egan and Mrs Ormrod (Vice Chair Governors) interviewed pupils in Year 3, 5 and 6 for the role of a new position called Playground Peace Police. The children have worked with their classes to develop this new role which will be performed by children at play times to help to keep play times happy and peaceful.  The Council created a job description (see below) and invited candidates for interviews just as would be done for a 'real job'.  Both the School Council and the children being interviewed behaved in a very professional and mature manner and they should be proud of how they conducted themselves.  The Council had a tough decision choosing which children they would recommend for the teachers to approve for the roles but we think we have a very good group of children ready to take on their role after half term.  Well done to everyone involved!  Pictures of the Playground Peace Police will be up on the website soon!

    Playground Peace Police Job Description

We need 4 Playground Peace Police for ‘infant play’ and 4 Playground Peace Police for ‘junior play’.  Both teams will share the responsibility of lunch break for their appropriate year groups.

    If you are in Years 3, 5 or 6 and are interested in becoming one of our Playground Peace Police, here are the things that the children at Northern Primary would like you to help them with;

    • Oversee games to make sure they are being played fairly and not being spoiled by others
    • Help to sort out small arguments
    • Look out for accidents and ‘be the first on the scene’
    • Monitor the football and basketball areas to ensure fair play
    • Keep an eye out for sad/upset children or children who are alone and try to help them if they need it
    • Watch out for mean words and bullying
    • Look out for emotional outbursts and report to the adults on duty as soon as possible
    • Help the adults on duty by reporting anything that you cannot sort out quickly and easily.

    We also believe that the Playground Peace Police should make sure that they;

    • Do not take sides
    • Do not just focus their attention on their own friends or year group
    • Do not tell children off, they are there to listen and talk and try to find compromises to help keep playtimes peaceful.

If you are interested in this exciting opportunity, please let your school council reps know!

  • Safer Internet Day

    Wed 07 Feb 2018

Today all of our children thought carefully about how they can make sure that they keep themselves safe when using ICT and the internet.

The children in Key Stage 1 all reminded themselves of their online safety charters which they created in September and signed their class charter to show that they agree to follow the rules on their charter.

The children in Key Stage 2 worked on their Acceptable Use Policy to identify ways that school expects them to keep themselves and others safe when they are using devices and the internet.

Each child has signed their own Acceptable Use policy to show how determined they are to ensure online safety is maintained at Northern.
