It's time to return to Mousehole, but this time to start planning our own story based on the plot of The Mousehole Cat. We're going to be using chunking to plan our story again. Remember, we are just planning our story, not writing the whole thing!

The Mousehole Cat

Extract the plot pattern

New plot innovation

Setting of Mousehole.

Setting description.

Introduction of Mowzer.

Introduction of main character.

More details about the village and villagers in Mousehole.

Introduction of other characters.

Storm occurs so no food available.

Problem in story so no food available.

Tom goes fishing in the storm.

One character goes to find food.

Tom returns and villagers feast again.

Character returns and villagers are no longer hungry.

So, the first one is the basic plot of The Mousehole Cat. The middle row is the plot pattern that we can now adapt. In the last one, we'll start planning our own. First we need a setting, then a main character and so on...

Your setting could be anywhere on Earth - a mountain, a forest, jungle, tropical island, the Arctic, the side of a lake, a desert, anywhere you like! For mine, I'll pick....a desert. So my ideas are in red.

Setting description.

A tiny village in the dry, dusty Sahara desert

Introduction of main character.

Humphrey the Grumpy Camel, who likes to moan and spit!

Introduction of other characters.

His kind-hearted owner, Mr Mo who owns a coconut shy.

Problem in story so no food available.

The ferocious sandstorm snake blows across the desert and stops food deliveries.

One character goes to find food.

Mr Mo and Humphrey set out to an oasis to get food - Humphrey is so grumpy that the sandstorm snake leaves him alone!

Character returns and villagers are no longer hungry.

Mr Mo and Humphrey return to the desert village with bags full of coconuts. The villagers make Humphrey some delicious coconut macaroons and he is no longer the grumpiest camel in the desert!

And it's as simple as that - we're just twisting the tale, as long as it follows the same basic plot structure that's all we're after. I'm sure you can do a lot better than me you creative dynamos, so let's see what you can come up with!
