This week is Sign 2 Sing week. The whole school has been learning to sing the song 'Greatest Day' with sign language as part of our work on Deaf Awareness. This links beautifully on our work to become a Rights Respecting School, as it links to Article 23 (Every child has the right to live a full and decent life with dignity and independence, and to play an active part in the community. Governments must do all they can do to provide support to disabled children) and Article 28 (Every child has the right to an education.) In Year 1 we have been learning about what it is like to be deaf, how people become deaf and what we can do to help a deaf person. We wrote about how we would feel if we were deaf and the things we would miss. We also looked at some simple sign language and the children had a go at using finger signing to spell their first names using the British Sign Language Finger spelling sheets. The children all did really well and showed a lot of enthusiasm during these lessons.
